Why this matters
Most prescriptions in the US and EU exist as both a generic (the active-ingredient name, recognised internationally) and one or more brand names sold by different manufacturers. Generics are typically much cheaper but contain the same active ingredient. Knowing both names helps you:
- Avoid accidentally taking two products with the same ingredient (e.g. Tylenol plus a generic acetaminophen cold remedy)
- Save money by asking your pharmacist about generic equivalents
- Recognise medications by their local brand when travelling abroad
- Read foreign packaging or prescriptions confidently
What's included
60+ of the most commonly prescribed medications worldwide, covering cardiovascular drugs (statins, ACE inhibitors, beta blockers, ARBs), diabetes (metformin, insulins), pain & fever (NSAIDs, acetaminophen, opioids), antibiotics, GI (PPIs, H2 blockers), mental health (SSRIs, benzodiazepines), and more. Both US-market brands and major European brands where they differ.
Important notes
- Brand names are trademarks of their respective owners and are listed for informational lookup only.
- Different brands of the same generic can have different inactive ingredients (excipients) — if you have a confirmed allergy to a specific brand's filler, check with your pharmacist before substituting.
- This is an educational tool, not medical advice. Always confirm substitutions with your prescriber or pharmacist.
